FORT THOMAS, Ky. — A Kentucky veteran who was working as a civilian contractor in Afghanistan has died in an explosion in Kabul that killed at least 15 people including six Americans.

The father of Michael Robert Bradford, 26, of Fort Thomas and Augusta, Ga., said his son was smart, good in different sports and about to become a father.

Gary "Moose" Bradford, also of Fort Thomas, told The Kentucky Enquirer (http://bit.ly/12i0nVO) he found out about his son's death from Michael Bradford's wife, Sasha, on Thursday afternoon. He said he was in total disbelief.

Two American soldiers were killed along with four American civilian contractors with DynCorp International, based in Falls Church, Va. They died when a suicide car bomber rammed a two-vehicle NATO convoy during rush hour in the Afghan capital, NATO and Afghan government officials said.

Bradford said his son would have been a fantastic father. The couple's first child is due in a few weeks.

"He's just been looking forward to seeing his son," Bradford said. "He's been counting the days. Every day, he'd tell me how many days he had left."

Michael Bradford served five years in the Army and achieved the rank of sergeant before leaving in 2011. He graduated from Highlands High School in 2005 and briefly attended Northern Kentucky University before enlisting in the Army.

Survivors also include his mother, Linda Bradford of Johnson City, Tenn.; and brothers Chris and Kenny of Fort Thomas.
