Herald-Leader staff report

Tates Creek is the top seed and the host team in the 43rd District high school baseball tournament that starts Monday, but those advantages and a couple of bucks will get the Commodores a hot dog at the concession stand.

There are no gimmes or guarantees in the 43rd, traditionally the strongest district in the state. That's the case again this year with Lexington Catholic, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Tates Creek having been ranked in the top 10 in the state.

"The longer we're in this business, the tougher this district gets," Commodore Coach Dom Fucci said. "We've gone from four teams to five teams, and all five are good ball clubs, sound fundamentally and coached well.

"To win, you've gotta have good play and a little bit of luck."

The 43rd has produced five state champions in the last 10 years in Lexington Catholic (2006, '09), Dunbar (2003, '07) and Lexington Christian (2005), and a state runner-up in Lafayette (2004). Lexington Catholic and LCA play in the district opener Monday night. The winner advances to face Tates Creek in Tuesday semifinals.

Lafayette and Dunbar meet in the other semifinal.

In the 42nd District at Bryan Station, top-seeded Scott County goes against Sayre in one semifinal. Defending district champ and region runner-up Bryan Station meets Henry Clay in the other.

District winners and runners-up advance to the 11th Region tournament at Madison Central next week.

Defending state champ Woodford County can qualify for the region by beating Frankfort in the 41st District semifinals on Tuesday at Woodford County.
