It's time to break out the sunscreen, pack up your summer reading and head for the pool, and families in Scott County have one more way to keep cool this summer.

Suffoletta Family Aquatic Center opened May 25 after being closed last season.

Geri Remley, director of Scott County Parks & Recreation, said she's been getting plenty of calls from people clamoring to take a dip.

They are "very pleased, to say the least," she said.

The center includes a shallow leisure pool covering almost 8,000 square feet, a 1,200-square-foot splash pad for young children, a five-story water slide and a 700-foot Lazy River, designed to duplicate the feel of drifting down a stream on an inner tube.

But the center has been plagued with problems. Last year at least 10 leaks were discovered in pipes below the pool. The pool had to be drained and a new concrete pad poured.

All the leaks have been repaired and crews were working last week to set up chairs and get the rest of the facility up and running, Remley said. The pool was originally supposed to open in 2006, but construction delays pushed the opening date back to 2007.

After a successful season in 2008, Suffoletta didn't open until late July 2009 because it wasn't in compliance with a new federal law requiring safety covers over pool drains to prevent swimmers being pulled in.

The aquatic park was open in 2010 and 2011, but missing the entire 2012 season means Suffoletta has been out of operation for all, or parts, of three of its first six swimming seasons.

This year to spread the good news about the pool's opening, fliers have been posted, the website has been updated with the new opening date and Remley has met with the Georgetown City Council and the Scott County Fiscal Court to get the word out.
