Man charged with killing Bryan Station student pleads not guilty

May 28, 2013

A Lexington man accused of fatally shooting a Bryan Station High School student last week pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Fayette District Court.

Ernest Wayne Wheeler III, 20, turned himself in Friday night after being charged with murder in the death of Patrick Puckett.

Puckett, 18, was a well-known football player who died after being shot in the torso on May 22 at an apartment complex on Ryan Circle.

Judge Megan Lake Thornton appointed a public defender to represent Wheeler and did not set bond. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 6.
