June 1, 2013

A Metcalfe County deputy sheriff accidentally shot himself in the right leg with his agency-issued gun, Kentucky State Police said in a release.

The shooting was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Friday at the Barren County Correctional Center in Glasgow.

Metcalfe County Deputy Sheriff Joshua Neal, 25, of Edmonton was in the secured entryway of the jail when he accidentally discharged the firearm, the release said.

Neal was taken to T.J. Samson Hospital with injuries that weren't life threatening, state police said.

Neal is a three-year veteran of the Metcalfe sheriff's department.

There were no inmates or jail personnel in the entryway at the time of the incident.
