High school baseball fans from across Kentucky invaded Lexington Monday for the first round of the Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament.

The opening game at Whitaker Bank Ballpark was particularly sweet for the cheering throng in red and blue from Mercer County, whose Titans defeated Apollo 4-0.

Freshman Ben Pinkston, who plays junior varsity, liked what he saw in his first year. "I'm really impressed. Everyone on the team is cool."

"It was excellent," agreed middle school player Trevor Allen. "We just beat a great team. Mercer County players ran the bases aggressively and they played hard."

For Apollo fan David Mulligan, just getting to the tournament was a thrill. "Everyone counted us out but we made it. People thought we had nothing but we kept fighting."

But Mulligan had good things to say about foe Mercer County, too, calling it "a superior team with great sportsmanship."
