One woman died and and another was critically injured early Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash, Jessamine County Chief Deputy Allen Peel said in a release.

Mackenzie Layne Sayre, 19, of Wilmore was pronounced dead at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington.

Sarah A. Smith, 19, of Nicholasville, a passenger in the 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Sayre, and Britney Larissa Kennedy, 21, driver of a 2010 Nissan, were both taken to the Lexington hospital.

Smith was in critical condition Wednesday night, according to the hospital. Kennedy was treated and released.

The collision happened at 1:08 a.m. Wednesday on Ashgrove Road (Ky. 1980) about five miles north of Nicholasville, Peel said.

The Taurus was eastbound on Ashgrove when Sayre lost control and struck the westbound Nissan, the release said.

Alcohol use was not suspected in the crash, which remains under investigation.
