Lex-Care: Help needed to pay electric bill

June 19, 2013

This week's case was submitted by Shannon Gordon, a social worker with the Senior Citizen's Center of Lexington.

Her client is a husband who needs $332.12 to pay an electric bill. Gordon's case notes show that this couple, who live in an all-electric apartment, have successfully coped with illness that resulted in an inability to work, applying for and receiving Social Security benefits, and adjusting to the diagnosis and treatment of the husband's esophageal cancer.

When the couple's electric furnace malfunctioned and the utility bill soared, they turned to Gordon for guidance. She has arranged for them to enroll in a weatherization program that will solve their heating problem. Once the utility bill is paid, the couple will be able to manage.
