G. Wix Unthank, former Eastern Kentucky federal judge, dies at age 90

Former federal Judge G. Wix Unthank, 90, of Harlan, died Tuesday.

Judge Unthank was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky in Pikeville in 1980. He later served in London until about a year ago, the Harlan Daily Enterprise reported.

He also was a U.S. attorney for the eastern district and a commonwealth's attorney, and he spent seven years as Harlan county judge.

He was a World War II Army veteran who earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Judge Unthank is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ward Unthank of Harlan.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church of Harlan, with funeral services beginning at 7 p.m.

The Harlan Honor Guard will perform military rites at a burial service at noon Saturday at Wix Howard Cemetery in Loyall. Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
