New lights at Helix Garage add color to Fourth

As people came to downtown Lexington for holiday festivities this week, something new that's red, white and blue might have caught their eye.

The Helix Garage at the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard showed off 80 new LED lights in patriotic colors for the July Fourth weekend.

Gary Means, executive director of the Lexington Parking Authority, said the lights were turned on at sundown Thursday. The parking authority wanted to debut the lights, which are mounted on the inside wall of the helix, on a night when the downtown streets might be crowded. "A lot of people put in a lot of extra time to get it done in time for the Fourth," Means said.

The lights, which cost $100,000, are meant to highlight the helix because "it's kind of a neat, architectural element," Means said. Since renovating the parking garage for safety reasons about a year ago cost $3.1 million, he said the price of the lights didn't seem that high.

"We had the money, and felt like it was good to do something special," Means said.

The lights can be shown in a variety of colors and patterns. Means said there will be a standard light and color pattern which will be featured most of the time. The parking authority will change the colors during holidays and special events.

Two ideas for the standard light theme are yellow lights or a color-coordinated scheme that would match the color of the signs on each level of the parking structure.
