A body found behind apartments in Lexington was that of a woman; and her death was being investigated as a homicide, the Fayette County coroner's office said Monday.

The woman has not been identified, according to a coroner's office press release. The state medical examiner's office in Frankfort was conducting an autopsy Monday.

The body was found behind apartments about 4:30 p.m. Sunday on the 1800 block of Marietta Drive, off Anniston Drive in eastern Lexington, police said earlier.

The apartments' manager was working behind the building when he "located a bag that had a very foul smell," police Lt. Eddie Hart said. The manager found a human body inside and called police, Hart said.

"Obviously, foul play is suspected," Hart said.
