Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops celebrated his 46th birthday Tuesday with another impressive recruiting victory.
Three-star wide receiver T.V. Williams announced his commitment to UK during a ceremony at his high school in McKinney, Texas. The 5-foot-8 speedster chose the Cats over Nebraska, Iowa, Oregon State and Houston.
Williams joins four-star prospect Thaddeus Snodgrass as the second wide receiver in UK's class of 2014, which now includes 19 recruits.
Scout.com national analyst Greg Powers described Williams as a player who can be used in multiple ways and should be a potent weapon in UK offensive coordinator Neal Brown's system.
"He's an electric player in space," Powers told the Herald-Leader. "He's able to make people miss and he's very dangerous with the ball in his hands. I would say his elusiveness and his ability to get open in space (are his best qualities). He's very shifty, so he's hard to lock down."
Williams will likely be used primarily as a slot receiver. He was one of 160 top prospects from around the country invited to last week's The Opening event sponsored by Nike. While there, he recorded some of the most impressive numbers of any player at the camp during individual workouts.
At 148 pounds, Williams was the smallest player at The Opening. Powers said he needs to get stronger — but not necessarily add weight — before he gets to college. "He definitely needs to be strong to break tackles or get off jams."
Williams isn't as highly rated as Snodgrass and many of the other wide receivers with UK scholarship offers for 2014, but his unique skill set makes him a coveted recruit.
Snodgrass and Kentucky quarterback commitment Drew Barker also attended The Opening and spent quite a bit of time trying to persuade Williams to join them at UK. Powers painted Williams as a likeable kid who seems to win fans wherever he goes.
"He's an elite-level player," Powers said. "He's been around other Kentucky commits. ... He's also been very accessible to the media. Very media friendly and a great guy to interview and talk to. He's got a lot of supporters. There's a lot of people that really wish T.V. Williams well."
