Construction begins on Lexington's first Costco

Construction has begun on the Costco warehouse store at Man o' War and Polo Club Boulevards in Lexington's Hamburg retail district.

The Seattle-based members-only warehouse company, the second-largest retailer in the country, announced in July 2012 that it planned to build a store in Lexington.

Similar to its rival Sam's Club, Costco sells items ranging from appliances and office supplies to jewelry and food. It also sells services such as business payroll processing, and unexpected items such as coffins.

The closest Costco to Lexington is in Louisville; there are two stores in Cincinnati.

Rick Shank, director of construction for Hamburg Place property management, said the superstore is expected to open in October, which is in line with projections announced in the spring.
