FRANKFORT — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes released an online video Thursday to invite her supporters to her campaign's official kickoff next Tuesday in Lexington and to tell Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell, that "I don't scare easy."
The almost four-minute video plays off a popular ad Grimes used in her successful 2011 campaign for Kentucky secretary of state.
That ad featured her two grandmothers, Elsie Case and Thelma Lundergan, who asked what rhymes with Grimes. Thelma Lundergan died last year.
The video, entitled "The Campaign Begins," shows the 2011 ad and Grimes speaking directly into the camera about next year's U.S. Senate race. It ends with the appearance of Elsie Case, who asks, "What rhymes with Mitch?"
In the video, Grimes says her late grandmother "knew that if you wanted to get something done, you don't stand in the way."
She said she is running against McConnell for the "people who don't come from much, but who work hard every day making Kentucky a better place for all of us."
She contends that McConnell, who has been in the Senate since 1985, has "wasted decades blocking legislation that would've helped Kentucky and our country."
She said she personally will be holding McConnell accountable on topics ranging from women's issues to his opposition to increasing the minimum wage.
Grimes also said she does not always agree with President Barack Obama, who is unpopular in Kentucky, but she thinks politicians should try to work together.
On the video, the Democratic candidate, who announced her intentions on July 1 to run for the U.S. Senate, personally invites her supporters and friends to attend the campaign kickoff at 5 p.m. July 30 at 312 North Limestone (The Carrick House) in Lexington.
McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said he had no comment.
Louisville businessman Matt Bevin, a Tea Party activist, announced Wednesday that he will be seeking the Republican nomination in the race.
