Former University of Kentucky football player Dallas E. Owens Jr., 56, died Sunday.

His fiancée, Donna Shawley, said he was diagnosed with a brain tumor about five years ago and had been living at Lexington Country Place for the past few months.

She said many former teammates rallied around Mr. Owens in recent months, and he enjoyed reminiscing with them.

"He had loads and loads of friends come in," Shawley said Monday afternoon. "I have fielded hundreds of calls."

Mr. Owens was a member of Wellington Church, where he and Shawley met.

He was also an avid golfer who enjoyed playing in many charity golf events, including the Children's Charity Classic.

Before his illness, Mr. Owens worked in finance, at First Liberty Mortgage, Shawley said.

In addition to his fiancée, Mr. Owens is survived by three daughters, Cherica Gay, Lindsay Brackett and Sydney Meaux; his parents, Dallas E. Owens Sr. and Lillie Atwater Owens of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Nannette Jordan; and two brothers, Nolan Pippen and Keith Owens.

Arrangements were incomplete Monday afternoon. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home in Versailles is handling arrangements.
