Ex-Bryan Station coach Murphy clarifies departure from school

Donna Murphy wants to set the record straight about her departure as girls' basketball coach at Bryan Station.

The Herald-Leader reported last month that Murphy had been fired.

"That wasn't true," Murphy said. "The principal (Mike Henderson) called me in and told me my (coaching) position was supplemental, and that they were going to open it up. He told me I could apply. I chose not to."

Murphy said it was "derogatory" for Henderson to open up the position after she led Bryan Station's girls to back-to-back district titles in her two years as coach.

"They told me when they hired me they wanted somebody who would care about kids, and who would bring discipline and organization to the program.

"We made some headway in those areas, but when the principal called me in and said he was opening up the position, he was pretty much saying, 'You're no longer needed here.'"

Henderson didn't want to comment except to say that Murphy "did a great job and we appreciate all she did."

The Herald-Leader also reported that Murphy hoped to work with the Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball program.

That was not accurate. She worked with the Kentucky Junior All-Stars high school team at Lindsey Wilson last month, but that was her only basketball connection to the college.

Murphy said she was "stepping back" from coaching for a while.

"When I commit to something, whether it's full-time or part-time, I'm overtime. So maybe this is the time the good Lord wants me to sit out and cool a bit."
