Fayette public schools open with few problems Wednesday morning

The first day of school in Fayette County is going smoothly, district officials said Wednesday morning.

Fayette County Public Schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said the only glitch involved a bicyclist who somehow ran into the side of a school bus that had stopped on Rice Road.

Only one student was on board at the time, and no one was injured, Deffendall said.

The bus continued on its run, she said.

Otherwise, there were no problems as more than 40,000 Fayette County students returned to classes Wednesday.

The Madison County Public Schools also kick off the new school year Wednesday. Several other area districts have already opened.
