A Laurel County man got into an argument with his wife, shot himself in the chest and then sat down on his front porch with his rifle, refusing to let sheriff's deputies get close enough to help him, the Laurel County sheriff's office said.

Ricky Joe Clark, 53, shot himself at his home on Locust Grove Road in London at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the sheriff.

When deputies arrived, they negotiated with Clark for more than 40 minutes before finally wrestling the rifle from him.

Clark was airlifted to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. No information about his condition was available Saturday.
