The Laurel County sheriff's office says a drunk driver who burst through a sobriety checkpoint Sunday night put up quite a fight before finally being stopped.

Johnny R. Baker, 61, of London failed to stop for three deputies who were running a roadblock at Old Richmond and Old Crab Orchard roads at 8:40 p.m., according to a news release.

The deputies got into their cruisers and tried to stop Baker, who deputies say took off on Old Crab Orchard Road.

As Baker's Buick Regal swerved on and off the road, he nearly hit some deputies who had tried to box him in, the sheriff's office said.

Baker finally stopped, but he refused to get out of the car and scuffled with deputies before trying to drive away again, nearly hitting a cruiser.

Deputies said they were able to get Baker out of the car, but he continued to fight with them. An ambulance was called for Baker, but he "cursed them and refused medical attention," according to the release.

Baker has been charged with driving under the influence, fleeing and evading police, resisting arrest, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment with a police officer as the victim, driving without insurance and "numerous other traffic charges," the release said.

He was also charged with intent to defraud/scheme/artifice to obtain benefits because he had someone else's food stamp card. Baker was taken to the Laurel County Correctional Center, where he was being held on $10,000 bond, according to the jail website.
