Your weekly guide to high school football

This weekend's kickoffs

City games

Paul Laurence Dunbar at Tates Creek in Central Kentucky Kickoff Classic, 5:30 p.m.: The last time New Dunbar coach Paul Rains faced a Lexington public school, he was at Mercer County in 2011 and his Titans lost to ... Dunbar. Tates Creek has beaten the Bulldogs five years in a row.

Lafayette vs. Scott County in Central Kentucky Kickoff Classic at Tates Creek, 8:30: Scott County whipped the Generals 42-28 in the 2010 playoffs in their last meeting, and there was a dust-up between the teams after the game.

Lexington Christian at Louisville Christian, 7:30: Former University of Louisville quarterback Stefan LeFors coaches the Centurions, who have lost seven of their last eight games against LCA.

Lexington Catholic vs. Bowling Green in Rafferty's Bowl at WKU, 9 p.m. (EDT): The two-time defending champion Purples have won 30 games in a row, including victories over Lexington Catholic the past two seasons. In 1999, Lexington Catholic beat Bowling Green 35-0 in a bowl game at Scott County to end the Purples' 43-game regular-season win streak.

Bryan Station vs. Murray in Roy Kidd Bowl at Madison Central, 5:30: Bryan Station faces a murderer's row of Bowling Green, Highlands and Lexington Catholic the next three weeks, but Murray is no slouch. The Tigers, a 2A power, have a 46-7 record over the last four years.

Top state games

Ballard at St. Xavier, 7:30: For the first time in 40 years, St. X doesn't have a Glaser as head coach. Bill Glaser was the Tigers' coach from 1974-81 before brother Mike held the reins for the next 31 years. Now it's Will Wolford's turn to lead the 12-time state title program.

Harlan County at Madison Central in Roy Kidd Bowl, 8: Harlan County, one of the top teams in 5A, is led by Carson Whitehead, one of the top linebackers in the state. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior also craves contact at fullback.
