A Laurel County man shot his wife to death early Wednesday and then called police to report the homicide, according to a news release from Sheriff John Root.

Police arrested Ernest C. Chumbley, 48, on a charge of murder in the death of Virginia M. Chumbley, 44.

Deputies went to the couple's home 10 miles southeast of London at 2:30 a.m. after Ernest Chumbley called 911 to report he had shot his wife, Root said. Officers found Virginia Chumbley dead in a bedroom.

An autopsy performed Wednesday indicated she had three gunshot wounds to the face, said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo Jr., spokesman for the sheriff's office. Police found a pistol near her body.

Ernest Chumbley was in the living room, and police arrested him.

Chumbley told police his wife was in pain because she had cancer and that she had asked him to end her suffering, Acciardo said. However, police are still investigating to determine the cause of the shooting, he said.
