Legends announce 2014 schedule, will open at home

The Legends will open their 14th season of minor-league baseball in Lexington on April 3, 2014, the team announced Wednesday.

Lexington will take on South Atlantic League rival West Virginia that Thursday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The game opens a seven-game home stand to start the season, which will be the Legends' second as the Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

The 2014 season includes 70 home games.

The 2014 schedule features 12 home games in April, 15 in May, 12 in June, 14 in July and 17 in August. There are 10 full weekends — Friday, Saturday and Sunday games — on the home schedule.

Promotions such as Thirsty Thursdays, education days, fireworks nights, military appreciation, special nights for charitable organizations and many others will be back in 2014.

Game times will be announced at a later date.

The Legends went 40-31 at home and 28-39 on the road in finishing 68-70 overall in 2013. Lexington finished the first half of the season 33-35 and in sixth place in the South Atlantic League's Southern Division. The Legends went 35-35 for a fourth-place finish in the second half.

The Legends finished the season with the league's best pitching staff in terms of earned-run average (2.99) but was last in batting with a team average of .213.
