One woman died and four people were injured Wednesday in a crash in Laurel County, Sheriff John Root said in a news release.

Nora Penix, 47, of London died at St. Joseph Hospital London, officials said.

Penix's car was northbound on U.S. 25 when a vehicle in front of it stopped abruptly to turn left onto Fariston Road. Her car swerved to the left to avoid collision, and it hit a southbound vehicle head-on, the news release said.

The driver of the other vehicle, Hobert Collier, 68, of London, was taken to St. Joseph London.

Passengers in Collier's vehicle, Gene Collier, 70 and Sandra Thompson, 45, both of London, and a 2-year-old girl were all flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The crash occurred at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 25, at the intersection of Fariston Road, about six miles south of London, police said.
