Lexington police were interviewing a primary suspect and others Thursday after a fight that ended in a fatal stabbing Wednesday on Mark Avenue.

The Fayette County Coroner's office identified the victim as Steven Campbell, 22, of Lexington.

Campbell's stepfather, John Parker, said Campbell, who had attended Bryan Station High School as a teenager, was set to get married in October.

The death is being investigated as a homicide, according to the coroner's office.

Campbell's death is Lexington's 14th homicide in 2013, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said. There were a total of 15 homicides in 2012, she said.

The stabbing in the 1900 block of Mark Avenue occurred about 10 p.m. Wednesday, during a fight involving at least three people. Mark Avenue is in a neighborhood off Georgetown Road.

Coroner's officials said in a news release that Campbell died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital of a stab wound to the chest.

Steven Campbell's father, Steve Campbell, said he didn't know details, but he thought his son had gone to the aid of a friend who was concerned that he was about to become involved in a fight.

"He was a caring person," Steve Campbell said of his son.

Funeral arrangements were pending Thursday at Kerr Brothers on Main Street, Parker said.

A fund in Campbell's name has been created at Woodforest National Bank in Lexington to help with funeral expenses, Parker said.
