Sharon Thompson: Chef Ouita Michel adds seafood restaurant to her lineup

Acclaimed Central Kentucky chef Ouita Michel's family of restaurants has a new member, Smithtown Seafood.

At 501 West Sixth Street, it's named for the neighborhood, in keeping with Michel's tradition of naming her restaurants, which include Wallace Station and Holly Hill Inn, in honor of the history of their locations.

The menu includes catfish, flounder, shrimp, tilapia raised by FoodChain, oyster dinners, sandwiches, fish tacos, fish nachos and pupusas, a Salvadoran dish of thick corn tortillas filled with seafood. Burgers and hotdogs also are available. For vegans, "Jack crab" salad rolls are available.

Dinner is take-out, or dining is available next door at West Sixth Brewing. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Call (859) 303-4100.

Greentree Tearoom's menu for October features the flavors of autumn. Included are roasted red pepper soup, oatmeal scones, broccoli and smoked gouda frittata, spiced butternut squash cups, and pumpkin cookies. The tearoom is at 521 West Short Street. Bourbon n' Toulouse, 829 Euclid Avenue, will be making a big pot of alligator étouffée in honor of Saturday's football game between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Florida Gators at Commonwealth Stadium. It will be available beginning at 11 a.m. Friday.

Holly Hill Inn in Midway is celebrating the harvest season at 6 p.m. Saturday with a dinner buffet inspired by Mediterranean flavors. Furlongs, 130 West Tiverton Way, now opens at noon Saturday and is offering a Louisiana brunch at noon Sunday. The brunch menu includes poached eggs on crab cake, spinach and lump crabmeat omelets, and chicken étouffée over poached eggs on a waffle. Furlongs is closed on Mondays.

■ Winners of the fourth annual Bluegrass Pizza Bake-Off are, from first place to third: DiOrio's Pizza & Pub in Louisville, Puccini's Smiling Teeth in Lexington, and Papalino's in Louisville. The event, sponsored by Lexington restaurant equipment supply company Pizzaovens.com, was earlier this month at Fifth Third Pavilion at Cheapside Park.
