Distance from Lexington: Versailles is 13 miles from downtown Lexington.

Known for: Castle Post, formerly known as the Martin Castle, overlooks U.S. 60 between Lexington and Versailles. The castle was originally built by a newlywed couple, but they divorced before it was finished. Now the castle is an exclusive event venue and luxury hotel.

Brief history: Woodford County was the last county organized by Virginia before Kentucky separated. The county was named for Revolutionary War hero Gen. William Woodford, who died as a prisoner of war. Versailles was founded in 1792, the same year Kentucky became an official state.

Don't miss: The beautiful horse farms sprinkled throughout the county. Many — including Airdrie Stud, Lane's End Farm and Winstar Farm — are open for tours.
