Human remains have been found in the Johnson Fork area of Magoffin County.

State police were called Friday by someone who had found some remains and thought they might be human, according to a news release from state police.

State police responded and determined that the remains were human, then returned to the scene Saturday and continued to search the area.

Carter Conley, Magoffin County's search and rescue coordinator, said his office assisted with Saturday's search.

He said he did not know whether the remains were from a male or female, only that more "body parts" had been found Saturday.

Conley said there was the "possibility" that the remains had been in the area for "an extended time."

State police said the remains would be sent to Frankfort to be identified.

Attempts to reach the Magoffin County coroner were unsuccessful.
