Kentucky State Police say a Clay county woman shot her husband Monday after he allegedly had abused her over a period of days.

An arrest had not been made as of Tuesday. An investigation was continuing.

According to a report from the KSP Post at London, troopers were sent to the scene on Hog Skin Road in northern Clay County about 5:45 p.m. Monday.

Troopers found Beverly Smith, 45, who apparently had shot her husband, Douglas Smith, 52, after a series of domestic assault incidents "over ... several days," state police said.

According to a state police news release, an investigation revealed that "Douglas Smith had reportedly assaulted his wife several times" earlier on Monday, and "allegedly fired a firearm towards her."

"During a separate incident Mrs. Smith obtained the firearm and shot her husband in the chest area," state police said.

Douglas Smith was flown to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center for treatment, police said. No information on his condition was available Tuesday.
