Jessamine County: Carlstedt named outstanding educator; Run for Ralph and Ryan Sunday

October 8, 2013

Shawn Carlstedt

The Kentucky Department of Education and Ashland Inc. have selected Shawn Carlstedt, a second grade teacher at Rosenwald Dunbar Elementary, as one of 24 outstanding Kentucky educators who will receive the 2014 Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Award. As a winner, Carlstedt will receive a cash award and a certificate and will be in the running for the 2014 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Award, which will be announced at a ceremony and luncheon in Frankfort on Oct. 16 at the State Capitol Building.

Judging was conducted by a panel of veteran educators who examined the applicant's teaching philosophies, teaching experiences and community involvement. Ashland has recognized outstanding Kentucky teachers with its Teacher Achievement Awards since 1988.

Two runs to benefit student athletes

The Run for Ralph and Ryan 6K will be at 2 p.m. Sunday on Maple Street beginning at West Jessamine High School and continuing to East Jessamine High School. Registration begins at 1 p.m. A $15 participant fee includes a T-shirt and prizes for winners. In addition to the 6K, there will be a one-mile fun run/walk from East Middle School to East High School. The event, now in its fifth year, pays tribute to the memory of local heroes Ryan Robinson and Ralph Sallee. Proceeds from the race provide college scholarship assistance for a West High and East High senior student athlete. Registration is available online at Njcpr.org. For more info, contact John Howard of Nicholasville/Jessamine County Parks and Recreation at (859) 885-9787, Ext. 23.
