West Jessamine takes early lead at state high school golf tournament

October 8, 2013

Defending champion Fred Allen Meyer of West Jessamine fired a 4-under par 68 to take the first-round lead in the Leachman/KHSAA State Golf Championship at Bowling Green Country Club on Tuesday.

Meyer, a senior who will play college golf at Kentucky, helped stake the Colts, the defending team champion, to a three-shot lead over St. Xavier going into Wednesday's final round.

West Jessamine also got solid play from Connor Haas (74), Austin Swentzel (74) and Byron Speach (77).

St. X, looking for its 19th state title, was led by Brendon Doyle (69) and Michael Sass (73).

Last year the Colts were 12 shots down to St. X going into the final round but rallied to win. This year they'll try to keep the Tigers from coming from behind.

"We're in a little better position than last year, and that's all we can ask for," Coach Adam Young said. "We'll go into tomorrow with the mindset that we're tied with St. X and we've gotta take care of business. Three shots in golf is nothing, as we showed last year."

West Jessamine had a first-day total of 293, two shots under its goal. St. X is at 296. Covington Catholic. at 305, is the only other team within striking distance.

Individually, Clay County junior Tyler "Chip" McDaniel, the reigning State Amateur and national Junior PGA Championship winner, shot a 70 and is in third place behind Meyer and Doyle. Tristan Bozarth of Hancock County was the only other player to break par Tuesday. He had a 71.

Scott County senior Billy Tom Sargent shot a 72 and is in fifth place. Franklin County sophomore Jacob Cook's 73 earned him a tie for sixth.
