Woodford County Fiscal Court OKs contract with police

Staff, wire reportsOctober 9, 2013

Woodford County: Woodford Fiscal Court on Tuesday approved a four-year renewal of its contract with the Versailles Police Department. As they have done since 2004, Versailles officers will patrol, enforce the law and investigate crimes and accidents not only in Versailles, but also in Midway and in the unincorporated areas of Woodford County.

Magistrates Larry Craig, Charles “Bones” Weber, Gary Finnell, Ken Reed and Gerald Dotson voted to approve renewal of the contract. Magistrate Jackie Brown and Judge-Executive John Coyle voted against renewal. Magistrate Duncan Gardiner abstained because he said he had not heard “the other side” against renewal. Before Versailles took over policing in the county nine years ago, Woodford County had its own police force. Eliminating the Woodford County police saved thousands of dollars and was hailed as a model of cooperation.
