There were no injuries and no children in an area under construction at Lexington's Tates Creek Elementary School where a small fire broke out shortly before noon Wednesday.

The fire started at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday and students were evacuated for about 30 minutes, said Fayette County school spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall.

Lexington Fire Department spokesman, Joe Best, said the fire was fueled by cardboard boxes that were on top of the roof. The blaze was quickly extinguished and the cause is still under investigation.

Deffendall said there was no structural damage to the building because the fire was small and contained to a metal portion of the roof.
