The Day at the Races: Rahystrada Keeneland's sentimental favorite

October 16, 2013

  • Wednesday's figures: On-track attendance, 8,253; on-track betting, $634,419.40; total betting including simulcast, $6,217,787.11.

This day last year: On-track attendance, 10,348; on-track betting, $716,881; total betting including simulcast, $5,170,775.

Coming up: Robert Courtney Jr.'s 9-year-old Rahystrada is the sentimental choice in a field of nine entered for Thursday's Grade III, $100,000 Sycamore Stakes going 11/2 miles on the turf. Rahystrada, a multiple graded stakes winner and fourth in last year's Sycamore, is making his first start since finishing 11th in the Grade I Arlington Million — his fourth straight appearance in that race. Among the challengers he is expected to face is Phipps Stables' royally-bred Reflecting, fifth in the Grade II Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland in April.

    Final furlong

    ■ China Horse Club's lone U.S.-based runner Tabreed scored her second stateside win for her owners, drawing off under James Graham to win Wednesday's featured eighth race going 11⁄8 miles on the turf. The 4-year-old came over from France at the end of last season and was making her sixth U.S. start. Sent off at 6-5 odds, Tabreed was one of the few favorites to come in on a day that saw double-digit long shots take the fifth, sixth and seventh races.

    ■ Owner Ken Ramsey reported Wednesday his lineup of jockeys for his seven planned Breeders' Cup entrants. Ramsey said Javier Castellano is slated to ride We Miss Artie (Juvenile), Real Solution (Turf), Bobby's Kitten (Juvenile Turf) and Granny Mc's Kitten (Juvenile Fillies Turf) with John Velazquez scheduled to be aboard Kitten Kaboodle (Juvenile Fillies Turf), Joel Rosario on Kitten's Dumplings (Filly & Mare Turf), and Joe Bravo on Big Blue Kitten (Turf).

Pre-entries for all 14 World Championships races held Nov. 1-2 at Santa Anita Park will close on Monday and will be announced on Oct. 23.

    ■ Ciao Bella Luna, winner of the Grade II Beaumont during the Keeneland Spring Meet, heads an overflow field of 14 3-year-old fillies and two also-eligibles entered Wednesday for Saturday's Grade II, $250,000 Lexus Raven Run Stakes at 7 furlongs on the main track. Ciao Bella Luna will attempt to join Gypsy Robin, who last year became the first filly to sweep the Beaumont and Lexus Raven Run.
