Brown-Forman is hosting a public event with Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard, the Laramie, Wyo., college student whose 1998 murder inspired the federal hate-crime prevention act of 2009.

Shepard will speak at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Louisville's Brown Theatre on Broadway. The event, part of a series of Brown-Forman employee events in October focused on raising awareness of bullying and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, is free and open to the public. Tickets can be reserved by contacting byoderg@b-f.com.
