Nicholasville mayor declares candidacy for state House

October 22, 2013

Nicholasville Mayor Russ Meyer

Nicholasville Mayor Russ Meyer has announced plans to run for the state House 39th District, which includes Jessamine County and a portion of southern Fayette County.

Bob Damron, who has held the seat since 1993, has entered the race for Jessamine County judge-executive.

Jessamine County Judge-Executive Neal Cassity announced Sept. 30 that he would not seek re-election after his term ends in December 2014.

Meyer, a Democrat, said the house seat represents "an opportunity to continue to focus on creating an economic environment that will help bring more jobs to our area. In addition, it would enable me to have more of an impact on education and the public school system, which is fundamental to a thriving community."Meyer, who was elected to city commissioner in 2000 and became mayor in 2006, said earlier this year that he did not plan to run for another term as mayor.
