Kentucky State Police arrested a Johnson County man for murder Thursday night in connection with the death of a 34-year-old woman last month.

Troopers from the Hazard state police post said they arrested Gary W. Ward, 37, about 7:15 p.m. at his home in the Meally community without incident. The arrest followed an indictment against Ward by a Knott County grand jury.

Ward is charged with one count each of murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse, state police said.

The charges stem from the death of Christina Barnett of Sitka, in Johnson County, whose body was found beside a Knott County road on Sept. 25.

The body was found by members of Barnett's family, who had been looking for her. She had been missing since Sept. 19.

Ward was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail at Hazard, state police said.
