Craft beer, bourbon and local foods will be the highlight of Savor Kentucky at Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park this weekend.

The tasting event, part of The Kentucky Gathering at the Alltech National Horse, is 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and noon to 8 p.m. Saturday. Food is free, but a $10 ticket is required for beer and bourbon tasting.

Participating craft breweries include Against the Grain Brewery & Smokehouse; Alltech's Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co.; Apocalypse Brew Works; Bluegrass Brewing Co. Brewpubs; Bluegrass Brewing Co. Production Brewery; Blue Stallion Brewing Co.; Country Boy Brewing; Cumberland Brewery; and Falls City Beer.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail distilleries will include Four Roses, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Town Branch, Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve. Kentucky food vendors include Bourbon Barrel Foods, Critchfield Meats, Enoteca's Wine + Market, Red State Barbecue and Wallace Station. Food samples will include Kentucky classics such as country ham, beer cheese and jam cakes, and modern twists on old favorites such as beer cheese grits, Lyons Farm beef, pickled okra and mint julep brownies.

Cooking school looks to the holidays

Wild Thyme Cooking School has a series of holiday classes planned for November. Here are dates, topics, and prices:

■ Nov. 15: A Biltmore Thanksgiving, $75. Recipes include oxtail soup, bass with hollandaise sauce, roast turkey and dressing. Wine tasting will feature two Biltmore Estate wines.

■ Nov. 29, 30: Parent and child gingerbread workshop, $40.

■ Nov 26, 27: Prepare your own Thanksgiving turkey, $75.

Meet the author

Barbara Harper-Bach will sign copies of her cookbooks in November. She will be at My Favorite Things, 2721 Old Rosebud Road, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Lexington Green from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 10, and the Kentucky Book Fair in Frankfort on Nov. 16. Her books include Butler's Doggie Dish of the Day Cookin' Clinic; The New Turkey Clinic, revised with photos; The Derby Party Cooking Clinic and The Pure Kentucky Pie Clinic.

Distillery offers buffet

Woodford Reserve Distillery is celebrating the holidays with festive lunches.

Chef-in-residence Ouita Michel and her culinary team have created a buffet full of Kentucky favorites and seasonal specialties. Dates are Nov. 20 to Dec. 22, and Dec. 28 and 29. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday. The cost is $30. Call (859) 879-1953.

A holiday dinner and lantern tour will be 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday in November and December. The cost is $50.

A learning opportunity

The Club at Spindletop Hall and Stuarto's Olive Oil Co. will have a cooking class from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13. It will be at Spindletop, 3414 Ironworks Pike. Cost is $38. Call (859) 263-0088 or (859) 269-0088.

The menu features fillet of salmon with a sesame seed crust, corn pudding with country ham hush puppies, charbroiled jerk marinated breast of chicken, and peaches stewed in balsamic and clove sugar.
