Versailles police have charged a man for falsely reporting that he was shot earlier this during a break-in.

Alvin Manley told police he accidentally shot himself in the stomach and fabricated the story because he didn't want to tell police he shot himself, according to a news release.

Manley called police on Oct. 22 to report a break-in at his home on Dale Avenue. He told police that a man entered the back door and shot him. Manley was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital to be treated for his injuries, the release said.

When interviewed at the hospital, Manley gave investigators a "vague" description of the intruder. Manley said he was shot with his own gun, the release said.

After completing the investigation, police interviewed Manley again on Tuesday and provided evidence from the scene, including his statement. Once confronted with the findings, Manley recanted his previous statement and admitted that he shot himself, the release said.

Manley is scheduled to appear in Woodford District Court on Dec. 16.
