Clark County: Many local events to honor veterans, give to your favorite Clark County non-profit

Veterans Day events scheduled in Clark County include:

■ Veterans luncheon, 11 a.m. Thursday at Hospice East, 407 Shoppers Drive. For information, call (859) 744-9866.

■ Veterans Appreciation Breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Church of God, 285 Winn Avenue.

■ George Rogers Clark High School JROTC Cadets will be placing flags on veteran's grave at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Winchester Cemetery, 625 West Lexington Avenue.

■ Generations Center Veterans Day program, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at 32 Meadow Street.

■ Clark County's Annual Veterans Day Observance, 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at College Park Gymnasium, 15 Wheeler Street.

■ Golden Corral's Annual Veteran's Appreciation Dinner, 4-9 p.m. Nov. 11. Veterans and active duty military receive a free dinner buffet and beverage.

■ American Flag Retirement Ceremony, 5 p.m. Nov. 14, at the track at the old high school, 620 Boone Avenue (now Conkwright Middle School). George Rogers Clark JROTC Cadets will properly retire unserviceable American flags.

Nonprofits needs help in Good Giving challenge

Support your favorite Clark County nonprofit by participating in the Good Giving Guide Challenge, an online giving campaign that runs Nov. 1 to Dec 31.

The Clark County Community Foundation will match dollar for dollar, up to $15,000, for each local nonprofit agency participating in the 2013 Challenge. To be eligible for Clark County Community Foundation match dollars, all contributions must be made through the Challenge website,, between 8 a.m. Nov. 1 and 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31.

These nonprofits in Clark County are participating in the challenge: Bluegrass Community & Technical College, Bluegrass Heritage Museum, Clark County Children's Council, Clark County Community Services, Clark County Homeless Coalition, Leeds Center for the Performing Arts, New Beginnings of Winchester, Partners in Education of Clark County, Rose Mary C. Brooks Place, St. Agatha Academy, The STRIDE Program, Winchester Youth Soccer League, and YMCA of Winchester.

Volunteers needed for creek clean-up Nov. 16

Strodes Creek Conservancy will have a creek clean-up at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 16. Volunteers should meet at Winchester Plaza near Applebee's. Volunteers should dress warmly and wear boots or waders and gloves. Pizza and Ale-8-One will be provided. For information, call (859) 745-4042
