A Lincoln County man was arrested after shots were fired Tuesday afternoon near Danville High School, Police Chief Tony Gray said Wednesday.

Charles E. Hampton, 27, of Stanford was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, Gray said. No one was hurt but police continue to investigate. At least two shots were fired about 5 p.m. at Proctor and Caldwell streets.

Gray said a "verbal altercation" occurred between two groups of people before the shooting.

The Danville High School football team was on a practice field behind the high school at the time. The Advocate-Messenger newspaper reported that the team was pulled off the field as a precaution.
