A 12-year-old girl died Wednesday after being hit by a car on Auburn Drive.

The Fayette County coroner's office issued a news release Wednesday night confirming the girl's death. The girl's identity was not released because her family had not been notified, the coroner's office said. The release said the girl, who was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, died about 5 p.m. The cause of death was blunt force trauma.

Lexington police Lt. Eric Lowe said the girl was hit at 4:20 p.m. by a Chevrolet Impala when the driver was making a left turn onto Auburn, which is off Eastland Parkway. Lowe said the driver's vision was impaired by the sun. Lowe would not identify the driver. He said he did not anticipate charges being filed.

The case is being investigated as an accident, the coroner's release said.

Fayette County Public Schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said a crisis team will be at the girl's school Thursday "to provide grief counseling for our students and staff. Our entire district is grieving with the families involved in this tragic accident." She would not say what school the girl attended.
