Gorton's service appreciated

November 15, 2013

Vice Mayor Linda Gorton yesterday announced plans to retire from city government in the same way she has served for almost 16 years. She was prepared, calm, articulate, incisive, positive and generous.

During her years on the council — eight as a district representative and now seven as an at-large member -— Gorton has played a pivotal role as our community addressed important, and contentious, issues. She noted some of them: advancing the causes of clean indoor air and clean water, farmland preservation and fairness.

Throughout, she has shown a quality that has become increasingly rare in public discourse: the ability to maintain a position firmly without demeaning or disrespecting those on the other side.

We thank her for her service and are glad she has another 14 months to serve this community as vice mayor.
