High school roundup: Lexington Catholic advances after second-round win at Russell County

Kentucky commitment Drew Barker will represent the West team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday.


Reese Ryan threw two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Lexington Catholic past host Russell County, 34-14, in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs Friday night.

Ryan went 14-for-21 for 163 yards in the win. Noah Mitchell led the Knights (8-3) with 65 rushing yards, two more than Russell Coutny had as a team.

LexCath outgained the Red Devils (10-1) 308-250 in total offense, with the hosts just edging the Knights 187-178 in passing.

David Bouvier led LexCath with five catches for 47 yards. Sam Letton recorded 48 yards and four catches. Both receivers caught a TD.

Mitchell led the Knights in receiving yardage with 56 yards on three catches.

Austin Smiddy went 9-for-17 for 179 yards and an interception for the Red Devils.

Andy Thompson completed his only pass attempt, late in the fourth quarter with the game in hand, for the Knights for a 15-yard TD to Andy Hickey.

LexCath completed 50 percent of its third-down conversion attempts (six of 12) and equaled that percentage on fourth down (one of two).

Russell County failed to convert on all three of its fourth-down conversion attempts.

Class 6A

No. 8 Simon Kenton 39, No. 15 Dixie Heights 19: Dillon Powell rushed for 111 yards and a late-game TD to give the Pioneers (12-0) another victory.

Simon Kenton QB Brenan Kuntz went 12-for-18 against the Colonels (8-4), finishing with 184 yards and a TD. He also rushed for 84 yards and two more TDs.

Class 5A

Franklin County 27, South Oldham 21 (OT): Chris Roberts had 228 yards and three TDs, including the winning score in the extra period, and the Flyers (11-1) survived on the road against the Dragons (8-4).

South Oldham's Ticorion Williams had 120 yards and a TD on 13 carries to lead his team. He went 1-for-2 passing, connecting with Jon Jones for a 39-yard TD to give the Dragons a 21-14 point lead at the 11:49 mark of the fourth quarter.

Just 30 seconds later, Roberts scored on a 44-yard run to get the Flyers within one point before Zack Durham connected on the extra point attempt, tying the game at 21.

Chase Lightfoot went 9-for-24 with two picks for the Dragons. He finished with 135 yards and one TD, to Jones.

Jones had 104 yards on six catches to lead all receivers.

Anderson County 35, Conner 34: The Bearcats (10-2) had two 88-yard kickoff returns for TDs and survived a late Conner comeback to advance.

Ross Cox returned the first 88-yard return for a TD with 3:19 left in the second quarter. Dusty Puckett returned the second TD in the opening seconds of the third quarter, giving Anderson a 21-7 advantage.

The Cougars (8-4) got within a point on a 38-yard interception return TD by Jesse McKeehan with 6:54 left in the fourth quarter. UK commit Drew Barker's pass failed to reach its target after Conner opted to go for the two-point conversion out of a field-goal formation.

Cox also had a rushing TD for the Bearcats. He finished with 48 yards on 15 carries.

The Bearcats won the possession battle, owning the ball for nearly 30 minutes of game time. They converted on 10 of its 13 third-down attempts, while holding Conner to just two of 10 on third down.

Bearcats QB Zach Carmichael went 15-for-22 for 167 yards and two TDs. He also had two passes intercepted.

Barker led the Cougars with 111 yards on 16 carries. He completed just six of his 23 pass attempts for 123 yards and two TDs, with an interception.

Barker, who also punts for Conner, averaged 41.8 yards on four punts in the game, buoyed by a 53-yard punt on the Cougars' first possession of the game.

Class 4A

Mercer Co. 31, No. 12 Boyle Co. 30: The Rebels (11-1) missed a key late-game extra-point attempt and were upset by the visiting Titans (8-4), who held on after giving up a 10-3 halftime lead.

Collins 63, Nelson Co. 14: Senior running back DeAndre Farris rushed for five TDs — four in the first half — and the host Titans (10-2) easily handled the Cardinals (8-4).

Class 3A

Wayne Co. 36, Corbin 0: The Cardinals (12-0) held the visiting Redhounds (9-3) to just 65 yards of total offense while gaining 381 themselves.

Tyler Guffey went 5-for-10 for 204 yards and four TDs. The Cardinals senior also rushed for 106 yards and a TD, accounting for all but 71 yards of the Wayne County offense.

Bourbon Co. 49, Russell 0: The Colonels (12-0) jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead to move on. Brent Holman had three TDs, including a 45-yard burst to open the big first quarter for Bourbon.

Mason Co. 49, Garrard Co. 7: The Royals improved to 12-0 for the first time in school history as they throttled the visiting Golden Lions (7-5).

Class 2A

Newport Central Catholic 36, Walton-Verona 0: Mac Franzen, a senior quarterback, carried 12 times for 179 yards and two TDs, and went 6-for-9 for 91 passing yards and another TD for the Thoroughbreds (8-4). Sophomore Jacob Smith added 145 rushing yards and a TD for the winners.

Class A

Hazard 34, Campbellsville 8: Brandon Jones rushed for four TDs, including a 90-yard burner in the first quarter, and caught another TD to figure in every score for the host Bulldogs (11-1), who made quick work of the Eagles (4-8).
