Herald-Leader staff reportNovember 20, 2013

Bourbon County and school districts in the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative are among the U.S. Department of Education's 31 finalists for the Race to the Top program, department officials said this week.

The program will provide $120 million to support locally developed plans to personalize and improve student learning, increase student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare students for success in college and careers, according to a news release.

The department expects to select five winning 2013 applications for four-year awards, which will range from $4 million to $30 million, depending on the population of students. Awards will be announced by Dec. 31.

The 31 finalists, representing 80 school districts in 21 states, were selected from more than 200 applications.

The Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative consists of 17 southeastern Kentucky school districts.
