$1.14 million in grants to provide free early childhood education materials

November 27, 2013

Free videos, classroom materials and interactive activities will be created for preschool teachers and families through $1.14 million in grants awarded to an early-childhood education partnership by the James Graham Brown Foundation and the PNC Foundation, according to group leaders.

The partnership called the Everyday Learning Collaborative includes Kentucky Educational Television, the Louisville-based National Centers for Families Learning and Metro United Way, a KET news release said.

The James Graham Brown Foundation's grant of $818,775 is the second-largest private gift in KET's history, according to KET.

As part of its Grow Up Great initiative, the PNC Foundation invested an additional $325,000, following a $150,000 grant in 2010 that helped launch KET's Everyday Science for Preschoolers.

With the grants, KET will create a collection of Everyday Learning video and interactive and classroom activities.

The materials will be distributed free online for use by early childhood educators and families. Curriculum toolkits for educators will offer lesson plans and training materials.

More than 1,000 early childhood educators statewide will receive free, hands-on training that will initially help an estimated 28,000 children and families, according to the partnership. It is expected that more than 100,000 Kentucky children and families will benefit over the next seven years. Reaching children from low-income families is a focus, the news release said.
