Pillsbury Bake-Off 'was truly awesome'

While Debbie Rowe of Lexington was one of 100 contestants at the Pillsbury Bake-Off in Las Vegas this month, she wasn't sure she would ever enter another contest.

"The Bake-Off was everything I imagined and more. The entire experience was truly awesome," Rowe said. "Even though it was a competition, you didn't feel like you were competing with the other contestants. Everyone was exchanging ideas and information, nothing like they were competing against one another. I became good friends with Kim Hookman from Knoxville, Tenn.

"After the awards dinner, she leaned over to me and asked if I would do this again, and I told her no. She told me the same, but the next day we were on the same flight to Atlanta and we exchanged emails. I am going to email my recipes for her to try and she will do the same, and we will each give our input on the recipe to the other. So yes, I will probably give it another try."

Vintners come out of retirement

Pam and Logan Leet sold their winery, Lovers Leap in Lawrenceburg, a couple of years ago. They weren't retired long before they received a call from the owners of River Bend Winery in downtown Louisville.

"They wanted to improve the wines, increase marketing and rebrand," Pam Leet said. "In the past year and a half, the winery has a new name, Old 502, a great event space and a new wine list that has gone from six retail outlets to over 130. It's been a tremendous whirlwind and so exciting to be a part of the only urban winery in the state as it makes it mark."

Old 502 Winery has been chosen as the official wine of the Belle of Louisville and the Spirit of Jefferson, and the exclusive wine during the Centennial Festival of Riverboats, a six-day celebration next October, Leet said.

40 restaurants sign up to help AVOL

Forty restaurants have signed up to participate in Dining Out for Life on Wednesday. The restaurants will donate a minimum of 25 percent of sales that day to AIDS Volunteers of Lexington.

"The event has been a community celebration and awareness-raising event for AVOL for four years," AVOL executive Mark Royse said. Participating restaurants are listed at Avolky.org/dofl.

West Sixth makes Christmas ale

West Sixth Brewery is releasing its first seasonal beer in a can on Monday.

West Sixth Christmas ale is a dark spiced ale with the aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg. The release party will be at 3 p.m. at the brewery taproom, 501 West Sixth Street. It will be available in limited quantities at retailers throughout Kentucky. Call (859) 951-6006 or go to Westsixth.com.
