Whether it's over the river and through the woods or a short drive down a country road, there are plenty of spots to find just the right tree for the holidays.

Christmas tree farms across Kentucky are open and offering all types of evergreens, from firs to spruce and pine — plus wreaths and other décor.

Here is a list of locations to get you started, including directions and hours. Farm owners tell us that Herald-Leader readers often arrive to shop for trees with our popular list in hand.

CENTRAL KENTUCKY

Fayette County

Barker's Christmas Tree Farm. 1470 Deer Haven Ln., Lexington. Choose-and-cut Scotch and white pine field trees, $32. Choose-and-cut Canaan and Douglas firs, $9 a foot. Pre-cut Fraser firs 7 to 8 feet, $60. Wreaths $15-$21. Tree stands, $20. Hours: 3:30-6 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun. Directions: From Man o' War Blvd., take Todds Rd. 1.8 miles out of town, past the Interstate 75 bridge. Turn left on Deer Haven Ln. and go about 3/4 mile; farm is on the right. Christmas Memories Tree Farm. 4890 Keene Rd. (Ky. 1267), Lexington. Choose-and-cut white and Scotch pine, Douglas and Canaan fir, $35-$100. Saws, twine and help loading trees provided. Hours: 9 a.m.-dark Sat., 2 p.m.-dark Sun. through Dec. 15. Directions: From Man o' War Blvd., go 1.7 miles south on Harrodsburg Rd. Turn onto Military Rd. Bear left on Keene Rd. (Ky. 1267). Drive 0.4 miles, and trees will be on your left. Contact: (859) 223-1140.

Nieman's Tree Farm. 5100 Sulphur Ln., Lexington. Choose-and-cut Fraser and white fir and white pine. 5- to 6-foot tree $50, 6- to 7-foot tree $65. Trees are up to 16-feet tall. Balled and burlapped (to plant) blue and Norway spruce, white pine and white fir. You can drive right up to the trees. Saws available; farm will cut and load tree for you. Portable restroom. Hours: 9 a.m.-dark Sat. and Sun., 3 p.m.-dark Mon.-Fri. Directions: From Man o' War Boulevard, take Todds Road 3 miles out of town, turn right on Sulphur Lane. Farm is on the right. Clark County

Yuletide Tree Farm and Nursery. 3925 Old Boonesboro Rd., Winchester. Cut trees available: white pine and Douglas fir. Balled and burlapped trees: Norway and blue spruce. Pre-cut and you-cut trees, $30; balled and burlapped trees, $45-$72. Wreaths, garland and a gift shop. Hours: 1-5 p.m. Sun.-Fri.; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat. through Dec. 22. Directions: From Lexington, take Interstate 64 to Winchester, Exit 94. Turn right on Bypass Road, then right on Ky. 627 (Boonesboro Rd.). Go to Old Boonesboro Rd. Garrard County

Cathole Bend Plantation Christmas Tree Farm. 1243 Cathole Bend Rd., Lancaster. You-cut and balled and burlapped trees available. Norway, blue and white spruce; white pine and Canaan fir. Lots of big trees with prices starting at $15. Hours: 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Fri.-Sun. Directions: Take U.S. 27 to Ky. 52 in Lancaster, turn west toward Danville and go 0.8 mile. Turn south on Ky. 1150 (Old Danville Rd.) and go 2.8 miles to the bridge across Dix River. Don't cross the bridge. Drive straight down Cathole Bend Rd.; the road ends at the farm. (859) 985-7044.

Madison County

Baldwin Farms. 1113 Tates Creek Rd., Richmond. Norway, blue and white spruce, and white pine. Cut your own tree (bow saws provided) or farm will cut it for you, $45. Fraser firs from North Carolina priced individually. Balled and burlapped trees start at $55. Other items include wreaths, garland, mistletoe kissing balls, salsa, honey and jams. Hours: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. daily through Dec. 22. Directions: From Main Street (U.S. 25) in Richmond, take Tates Creek Road (Ky. 169) 3.5 miles and look for signs on left. Contact: (859) 582-5785. Trigg County: Land Between the Lakes, Golden Pond. Permit required for families to cut down one free cedar tree in select regions of the national recreation area Dec. 2-24. Permits, maps, and cutting guidelines available at Golden Pond Visitor Center, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat. and Sun., or LBL administrative office, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Mon.-Fri..
