Lex-Care: Homebound mother needs help with electric bill

December 3, 2013

Kristy Brandenburg, a social worker at the Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging/Independent Living, worked with a client who was in need of $500 to pay her electric bill.

The applicant is homebound and suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, degenerative disc disorder and high blood pressure. She is on oxygen and cannot be left alone. The applicant's daughter had to quit her job to care for her and discovered that the electric bill is in arrears. The client received an increase in her Medicaid budget, which allows for the hiring of a caregiver, so the daughter is able to return to work full-time to support her mother.
