A Lexington police officer suffered a leg injury in a crash Tuesday night on Newtown Pike.

Police Lt. Chris Young said the officer, who was not identified, was riding a motorcycle outbound about 8:30 p.m. when he went onto the median and lost control. The officer let go of the motorcycle, which continued down Newtown Pike for about 75 yards.

Young said a UPS truck following the motorcycle stopped, blocking both lanes of traffic to protect the officer, who was lying in the middle of the road. "The UPS driver did a great job," Young said.

He said it was unclear what caused the wreck.
