Talbots Buyout

PAUL SAKUMA — AP

The Talbots clearance outlet store in Lexington's Hamburg shopping district is going out of business.

Betsy Thompson, a spokeswoman for the women's clothing and accessories retailer, confirmed that the store will be closed, not just moved. She said no date has been set "but mostly likely in January."

The closing is part of Talbots' overall retail strategy, she said.

"We constantly monitor all of our stores and the traffic patterns," she said.

Thompson said that 12 to 18 jobs, full-time and part-time, will be eliminated, but it is unclear how many workers will be affected.

Talbots is talking to employees and has invited them to apply at other stores in the chain, she said.

Talbots has a store in Lexington's Fayette Mall. Beyond that, the nearest stores are in Louisville, Cincinnati and Bowling Green.

Hingham, Mass.-based Talbots was established in 1947. At the end of fiscal 2012, it operated 504 Talbots stores in 45 states and Canada and Talbots.com. The company was bought by Sycamore Partners Management and was taken private last year.
